office products
By carly twist

I work in the administration department for a local school and my job involves looking after all the Office Products. This involves the ordering and processing of all the Office Products the school requires. Not just compasses in the Mathematics department or colouring pens for the Art department, my job involves liaising with the head of each department to find out what Office Products they need. Obviously, this can be a very time consuming exercise and I am constantly thinking of new ways to cut down on the time the job takes. My latest idea is to design a form with all the products a particular department requires on it. This will involve some input from the head of department initially to ensure that I am not thinking of ordering products they do not need, but once the form is agreed I think it will be much better in the long run if the departments can just tick what they want to order from a sheet. Luckily, this suggestion has gone down very well with everyone I have discussed it with and I am hoping to implement it across the school very soon.

I recently got a job working for the local council near my home doing marketing for the chief executive`s department. My role include promoting the council`s services and ensuring that people know where to find the information they need. Having previously worked in private practice it was a marked shift in working practice for me and it is taking time to get to grips with the way a local government office works. One of the things that I find government departments are really keen on is equal opportunities training. Obviously, or should I say hopefully, most enlightened people in responsible jobs these days practice equal opportunity policies but in local government this cannot be taken for granted and so equal opportunities training is considered a key factor in every employee`s work life. Equal opportunities training can cover a variety of subjects. It can include racism, disability issues. It can even cover things like making sure that all council literature is available in different languages so that all members of the community can access the council`s services. I think this is such a good idea as it will bring these important issues to the forefront of the minds of every employee of the council.
